Our sins aren’t newly found.
They’re like old rags.
It isn’t that God gives us
the same old mercy
the same old grace
to our newly found sins,
but
in the midst of our
old ways
old sins
old habits
His mercy is new every morning.I’ve had this thought on the basis of theology that God is the creator, the maker of the new. I, although made in the image of the creator, at the end of the day, am a creation.
He isn’t just the creator of the world. He is the creator of mercy, of grace, of love. It isn’t the complete picture to say that God “feels” new mercy every morning. He doesn’t just feel love; rather, he is love, and manifests love. He embodies love, and as the creator, is constantly creating love. New love. He is the good creator, and his mercy really is new. It’s brand new, made just for this moment. Spankin’ brand new mercy.
My sins are just old. I’m tired of them. It really is the same old, and I fall to these same old things. And knowing that God’s mercy is new — really new — is a breath of fresh air. It tells me that God is enough, that He is infinitely bigger than me, my sins and my struggles. My sins are old nothings compared to the spankin’ brand new mercy that He gives.
This isn’t to say that what Jesus did on the cross, “old mercy,” is not enough. Many arguments can be made about this. God transcends time, therefore his “old mercy” is actually mercy eternal. Or, that God’s mercy is so astronomical (actually, bigger than astronomical… haha.) that it doesn’t really ever get overused and old. But I’m looking at it from the basis that He is the creator. Not just the creator of the material world, but of the spiritual world, of our spiritual needs. I don’t know, I don’t think I’ve just never thought this way before, and it’s really fresh. Brand spankin’ new.
Daniel’s Xanga entry from 13 October 2009. He’s an interesting fellow.
